This process is designed to make sure that we are the right school to serve the life-long learning needs for your child and your family. We recognize that we ask you to dedicate time and thought to the process. Families who are thriving in our community often share that they truly enjoyed the process, and we hope you do too.
During the summertime it's obviously not an option to come for a day in the studio. Instead, we'll follow up to your submission below with one final step - a few follow up questions. If we're a fit, we'll follow up with an invitation to enroll.
We are a learner-driven community. That means our learners drive their learning, their relationships and their communities, appropriate for each studio's mix of ages. While they have a lot of freedom, they also have a lot of responsibility, and there are real opportunities to fail, learn, and reflect.
For parents, we look for those who believe deeply in their children and long for them to find a calling, that deep need in their heart that matches a deep need in the world. Additionally, we're looking for parents who believe in approaching life as a hero's journey, where exciting adventure and difficult challenge lead to personal transformation. Being a parent at Acton will be challenging, but for the right parents it is far more meaningful.
For learners, we look for the following:
Is this learner ready to engage in learning along with the rest of the community? This looks like a general desire to engage in learning. There are a lot of systems and tools the studio uses to encourage learning, so it's okay not to be fully self-motivated yet, but there does need to be a general willingness to engage.
Is this learner ready to take responsibility when they fail? This means it's okay to make poor choices, but each learner must own the consequences and accept them as part of their journey.
Is this learner ready to be part of a tribe? This means a general desire to contribute and be kind. This might look like making a comment in a discussion, following the contract when asked, helping clean up the studio during studio maintenance, etc. Learners who intentionally hurt others physically or emotionally, or intentionally damage the studio might not yet be ready.
Plan to arrive at or before 8:45am. Our morning starts promptly at 9:00am, and this will allow some time to get settled before the day begins.
Parents are invited to stay and watch the morning launch and the transition into independent core skills, then we'll invite you to leave and return at the end of the day.
Plan to return at about 2:50pm to observe the close discussion. Our day will end at 3:15pm.
If your child is auditioning for Spark, instead of a full day we do a partial day, so you can plan to return at 11am.
Your child will need to bring a lunch and, if they are able to read, a current book they are reading. We will take care of everything else!
If your child is auditioning for Spark, please bring a healthy snack.
Once received we'll review your submission. If we believe we can serve you well, we'll reach out to schedule an audition day where your child will be invited to spend a day as a learner in our studio to see if they are ready for our learner-driven environment.
